Why Does Written and Verbal Communication Allow You to Stand out in the crowd

By Amy Sanchez

As a student preparing to venture into the work force, understanding the traits that make employees attractive to employers can be daunting and anxiety inducing task. Philosophers, educators, and managers have established a multitude of personality test, hiring models, and other framework to try and simplify what it

Inaccurate Interpretation of Instruction to Your Audience

One way to lose the attention of the reader is to not speak to the right audience. An employer is not going to be spoken to as they are babies who have no idea what they are doing. You don’t want to make a resume five pages long and add unimportant information that doesn’t pertain to the employer’s needs. You want to ensure that you show your soon-to-be boss or coworkers that you know that you are the best choice for the job. You want them to know you respect their time and thank them for giving you a chance to shoot your shot at a job. You need to ensure that you can think on your toes, to ensure you are getting the job right out of college. You can use language that is too sophisticated for a job just as well as you can use language that incorrectly shows a lack of knowledge.

Sharing Ideas and Instructions Clearly

Sharing ideas with both effective and efficient language is tantamount. The ability to concisely convey an idea will set you apart from the others in the workforce. When your coworkers do not have to make assumptions or guess what you are trying ask them to do, it increases productivity as the guess work is no longer a hinderance. How you convey a message is equally important. If you are not standing in front of the audience words and tones can easily be misconstrued. This can lead to people taking things personally or hearing incorrect messages. This requires a focus on tone, body language, and inflection in face-to-face encounters, and in written communication tone, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. The simplest misuse of an exclamation point, capitalization, or vocab word can diminish the efficacy of any email or bulletin board posting.

Understanding the Task and Jobs

If you lack the understanding of your own message or confidence in your knowledge of the task or message at hand, the team often struggles to work cohesively and can hinder effective and efficient production. Make sure that you are not stating false statements or giving the wrong information to your listeners. This can lead your listeners to not trust you and, in the end, reject your directions. Research your topic and plan what you are going to talk about. If you cannot remember what you want to say, write it down. Exemplifying strong communication can be the difference between getting that dream job or being left out of the candidate pool.

Final Question?

How will you improve your verbal communication with your coworkers and get the dream job you want?
